Amaya's Boudoir Photos

Yesterday I met with Amaya to shoot her boudoir photos. I was thrilled with how great the shoot went and with all of the incredible portraits that resulted. Amaya gave me permission to post the photos, and I tried to keep all of the blog shots to PG13-ish in nature. We also did some fine art shots that I'll be featuring on my art website sometime after the New Year.

Just a note that if any clients or potential clients are interested in commissioning me to shoot their boudoir photos, my schedule is pretty flexible in Jan/Feb so we can easily get photos finished in time for Valentine's Day gifts. Also, no boudoir shots are posted on the website without the clients' full consent.

Best Posed Wedding Photos of 2007

Okay people, this is the Crème de la Crème of the "Best of" contests - Best Posed Wedding Photos.

There were too many photos for me to pick just 10, so what I did was split the contest into 2 sections. Best "Bride/Groom" photo and Best "Group" photo. So that means you're voting for two different photos. The Bride/Groom photos are first and the group photos are second (but then again, that was pretty obvious wasn't it?).

I'm going to have voting for these contests end on December 22, as I doubt most people will be spending a lot of time on the web in the days immediately preceding Christmas so be sure to vote and tell your friends to vote too! Just email me with your votes.

And the winning "Candid" photo is...

Whew, the past few days have been busy! I did formal photos for the Snowball at Shanksville on Saturday and yesterday I shot family photos for some of my favorite people in the world - the Custer's. I'll try to update the blog with all the goings on as soon as possible, but right now I wanted to post the winner of the best candid shot.

The voting was again very busy and the result wasn't quite as close as last time around but it was still pretty darn close. The winning photo is...

Sheena & Ben

This photo of Sheena and Ben has long been one of my favorite shots and I'm happy to see everyone else thinks so too. The photo was taken by Sharon at our first wedding of '07, way back in January. Congrats to Sheena & Ben and thanks to everyone for voting!

Next contest is best posed wedding portrait. I'll try to get the photos up some time this evening. There will likely be more than 10 so be prepared for lots of choices!

Tracey in her coat

All year long I've wanted to photograph someone wearing one of those cool coats that have a faux fur lining around the hood, but whenever I saw someone with one, it never failed that I didn't have my camera with me.

As luck would have it, earlier this week I was on MySpace and I saw a photo of Tracey wearing just such a coat. I'd shot Tracey's senior photos over the summer and I immediately sent her and email telling her to come to the studio and to bring that coat. She happily obliged and this afternoon we had a quick session. As an artist, it's easy to visualize a photo, but executing it the way you see the image in your mind isn't always possible. Well, this was one time that I am happy to say that the photo I'd created in my mind came together perfectly in the actual image. Check out the last shot to see the portrait I've been wanting to make all year long.

Thanks, Tracey!

Tomorrow I'm shooting formal photos for "The Snowball", a school dance at Shanksville-Stonycreek High School. It will be the first time I'd covered such an event and I'm looking forward to it.

Ice, ice baby

"All right stop collaborate and listen
Ice is back with my brand new invention--"

Sorry, I had a flashback to the 90's.

In case you haven't looked out the window (or listened to the news, if you're not stuck in Western Pennsylvania), we had an ice storm today. About a quarter inch of ice covered everything and a steady rain fell all day long. Needless to say, it was an "stay indoors" kind of day.

In between editing sessions, I was able to get two new photos of Eli, our dog. I put the camera on ISO 1600 so I wouldn't need to use the flash and I like the effect created by the darkness and grain.

Best of 2007 - Best Candid/Non-posed Photo

The next "Best of" contest is for the Best Candid/Non-posed of the year. The candid (or photojournalistic) photos at weddings are some of my favorites and it was so hard to narrow it down to only 10 photos. But, I had to pick 10 and these are the choices. Voting begins now and ends Monday Dec. 17th at non (eastern time).

I've also had a few people ask me what the prizes are for the voters, so I wanted to clarify that. If you're a client of mine, you will receive a Gift Certificate for $50 to use toward the purchase of prints. If you're not a client, then you'll receive a $25 American Express Gift Card.

And now the best part - the photos!

And the Best Cake Photo winner is...

Wow! I thought the contests would be a fun way to honor the AWESOME couples I've worked with in 2007 but I never expected to see so much voting! We had over 70 votes! Thanks to everyone who voted in the contest and I hope everyone votes in the rest of the contests as well. Remember that 3 random voters will win prizes!

Okay, without further ado, the winner of the Best Cake Photo of 2007 is...

Michelle and Chuck!

The voting was super close, with only four votes separating 1st and 2nd place and just two votes separating 2nd from 3rd.

The next contest is Best Candid Wedding Photo of 2007 so check the blog soon to see the choices!

Larissa & Brandon's Maternity Photos

As mentioned in a blog a few weeks ago, I've been looking for a couple that was "expecting" to photograph for some maternity photos. Larissa contacted me and we quickly clicked. It was obvious she wanted something artistic and that's exactly how I wanted to tackle the photos, rather than in a more traditional "Sears Portrait" kind of way. Her hubby Brandon also agreed to pose for the shots and this morning I had an awesome time working with this cool couple.

I had a really hard time choosing which photos to post on the blog as we got so many amazing photos. Brandon and Larissa are planning on another shoot around January and I already have new ideas to try out. Additionally, I'm still looking for one or two more families who want some "artsy" maternity shots so if you're interested, send me an email.

Bah Humbug

I don't make a habit of whining/complaining on my blog but I can't resist it today. If you don't want to read it, I won't be offended.

When I was younger, I loved Christmas/December/my birthday (which is Dec. 30). It was my favorite time of the year. Over the past several years the holiday has lost its luster. It started when my grandfather began getting sick on my 12th birthday. He would lose his battle with cancer less 2 years later. Things were never the same after he passed away and the holidays were always bittersweet.

Then, a day before my 21st birthday my father was diagnosed with cancer. He would go on to fight and beat the disease but getting that kind of news when we did forever changed my feelings toward the time of year because every year afterwards, December meant 1 year checkups when the doctors would run a battery of medical tests on my dad and we'd wait to hear whether he was still cancer free. The "best" time was when he had his tests on Christmas Eve and we had to wait until after the holiday to learn whether he was healthy or not. But, as I said, things did work out and he remains cancer free.

Just as he reached his "5 year" mark, our health worries turned toward my grandmother who was, at that time, getting into the more advanced stages of Alzheimer's Disease. In 2003, during the last "family Christmas" it was clear that she wouldn't be in her home for another. The past 3 years, we spent Christmas morning in the nursing home visiting her and seeing her fall further and further into the chasms of the disease. On Christmas day 2004 she turned to my mother (her daughter) and said "Who are you?"

This year, as I started seeing the stores put out decorations and hearing Christmas tunes on the radio, I tried to put aside the "Scrooge" inside me. I knew Christmas this year would be hard, as this year our dog Tobe died and the BEST part of Christmas was always watching him tear into his presents and shred the paper. He loved it so much. I know the day will be so different without him to push away the bad memories.

Well, today I learned my father had been laid off from his job and that he has no idea if or when he'll be called back. I'm, to be perfectly frank, pissed off. My parents had to deal with so many hardships that this seems extremely unfair. My dad is less than 2 years away from "retirement age" and I know the last thing he wants to do is start pounding the pavement and looking for a new job. He had a great job at an area business, but they closed down around 2 years ago because they couldn't compete with competition from China. When he landed this new position, we all breathed a sigh of relief thinking it would carry him into retirement, but now that has changed too due to the slumping economy. So, my parents go into the holidays filled with worry and uncertainty.

Yep, I hate this time of year.
